Masters student in the Tucker Lab at UC Davis
I am seeking applicants for a MSc project on heat stress in dairy cows. Working in my laboratory will offer you a training in the field of animal welfare and behavior. You will gain data collection and analysis skills, as well as learn how to write scientific papers. Graduate students in my group also regularly engage in outreach and extension activities connected to their project(s). The overarching goal of the research in my lab is to generate knowledge that contributes to society. I want to train and invest in students that share this mission.

Research topic: Evaluation of soaker and fan control algorithm for keeping cows cool and optimizing energy and water usage on commercial dairies

Position details: MSc degrees typically take 2 years. The position includes a partial stipend. Most students in my lab also work as teaching assistants to fund their remaining stipend and fees. More detail will be provided about how this funding model works, if you choose to apply.

Requirements: BSc in biological, agricultural or animal sciences; previous experience on commercial dairy farms is desired. Spanish language skills would also be beneficial. Creativity, strong work ethic, and the ability to work as part of team are key features of the successful candidate. This position is only open to US citizens or residents and a driver’s license is required. The data collection involved in this project requires the ability to walk and stand outdoors in hot conditions (up to 115°F or 46°C) and lift up to 50 lbs or 23 kg.

Start date: Data collection will begin, ideally, in April 2023, but as late as mid‐June 2023 would be possible; coursework and enrollment will begin in September 2023 (Fall admission cycle; applications are accepted until Jan 15, 2023).

How to apply: First, contact me, Dr. Cassandra Tucker (cbtucker@ucdavis.edu) with your GPA, GRE scores, a CV and a statement of interest that explains how my lab and this position is a fit for you. After you connect with me and I encourage you to move to the next step, you will need to submit a formal MSc application to the Animal Biology Graduate Group by Jan 15, 2023. https://animalbiology.ucdavis.edu/admissions/animal‐bio‐ms

PhD student in the Tucker Lab at UC Davis
I am seeking applicants for a PhD project focused on dairy cattle behavior and welfare. Working in my laboratory will offer you an in‐depth training in the field of animal welfare and behavior. You will gain command of data collection, statistical analysis and writing scientific papers. You will have numerous opportunities to engage in creative and innovative scholarship. Graduate students in my group also regularly engage in outreach and extension activities connected to their project(s). The overarching goal of the research in my lab is to generate knowledge that contributes to society. I want to train and invest in students that share this mission.

Research topic: broadly, dairy cattle welfare and behavior; there is scope to develop the direction and questions addressed in this PhD. Some of the student’s financial support will come from a project focused on evaluation of a soaker and fan control algorithm for keeping cows cool and optimizing energy and water usage on commercial farms. This time spent on commercial dairies engaging in data collection will be an opportunity to gain insight into real‐world challenges and deepen knowledge about the questions to be asked and answered over the course of the degree. My hope is that this time on commercial dairies will inspire research questions that are important to the student and relevant to society.
