Research For my M.S. research project, I developed a cow-calf health and handling assessment and tested it on 30 California ranches as part of a benchmarking and epidemiological study. Across the ranches, cattle health problems were rare, but there was variation in stockperson handing and cattle behavior in the chute. We found that health outcomes were associated with various ranch characteristics, aspects of management, and producer attitudes and cattle handling was influenced by a number of facility and stockperson factors. Most notably, we found that reducing electric prod use may be a key area for making cattle handling improvements on a ranch. While chipping away at this project, I've created MyGlampingPlan as a platform to share what I learn along the way and offer helpful resources for my fellow glamping entrepreneurs. |
